For many Google Analytics professionals this may be fairly straight forward, however many people using analytics on occasion require more than 4 goals for the website profile they are currently tracking.

The answer is very simple, a website profile is exactly that, it is a profile for a website. Need more than 4 analytics goals for a website? The solution, simply create a duplicate website profile for you site.

Login to your Google Analytics account, select your analytics account where the website you are currently tracking is located. Remember that analytics accounts contain website profiles. The analytics account dashboard will then display the website profiles that are associated with the selected analytics account and it is from here that you are able to create additional website profiles, setup goal tracking and manage filters.

At the bottom of your analytics account dashboard you will see 3 options, “Add Website Profile” , “User Manager” and “Filter Manager”. The “Add Website Profile” option you will also notice can be accessed in a number of ways including links along the righthand side of the dashboard as well as in the top righthand corner of the dashboard.

Once you have selected the “Add Website Profile” you will be taken to a screen where you will need to choose between either creating a new profile for a domain (used when adding a new website to your analytics account to track) or the option to create a profile for an existing domain.

We are going to be using “add a profile for an existing domain” to create a duplicate website profile for a website you are currently tracking in Google Analytics. Fill in the details and remember to create a unique profile name for this duplicate profile that will help you differentiate between the duplicate profiles. Click Finish, and your duplicate profile has now successfully been created.

Please note as this is now a “new” profile, analytics data will only be gathered from the profile creation date. If you require historical data within this duplicate profile, ensure that you create your additional duplicate profiles when you setup your analytics account. Each profile will allow you up to 4 analytics goals per profile and you are able to have a maximum of 50 website profiles per analytics account. Creating multiple profiles for websites can be used for a number of other analytics tracking options, not just to maximise your goal tracking, but can be used in conjunction with analytics filters to track specific traffic (only want to see paid search analytics data?), subdomains and even social media data tracking. The options are limitless for their uses.

NB. When applying filters to a website profile, this will affect the data processing for that website profile. You will be unable to remove filters and see RAW data afterwards. In otherwords, once data has been processed with the filters associated with that website profile, you will be unable to reverse the filtered data. It is always a good idea to create 1 unfiltered backup website profile to refer to when in need.

Update:

Google updated goals within analytics in October 2009, now allowing up to 20 goals per profile. There are now 4 goal sets that can contain up to 4 goals each, allowing more freedom in what you may want to track as goals, from downloads through to purchases.

It’s 2009 and for many South Africans back on the 5th, the catchup began while at the same time being fairly relaxed while the rest of the world started slowly drifting back from their time off.

The year kicked off with the fun Nerdies 09 awards, which i’m sure everyone’s twitter feeds went crazy with nominees and updates.

Surprisingly enough the reports coming in on the holiday season showed that the recession did not affect online retail as much as anyone would expect, with Hitwise reporting increases in online traffic and spend in the UK. As from today, IMRG reports and increase in 14.2% for online retail for the December 2008 period. Seems the recession had less effect on online holiday shopping as people would have expected. I can agree with that, being the unfortunate one to have to dive into the shops on Christmas eve, where there seemed to be more people shopping than i’ve ever seen in my life (South Africa that is).

Google’s favicon goes through a makeover, that recieved a mixed response. Personally, i found it fairly arb within my FF tabs, something with colourful blotches? Google is not alone, Yahoo went through retrenchments recently, Jerry Yang even left the board, now it seems rumours are flying around that Microsoft is up next. Google then recently announced layoffs and a shutdown of services, which include uploads to Google Video. Google also recently announced the release of their own sitemap generator, which i have yet to play around with.

Steve Jobs announces a leave of absense from Apple due to cancer, soon after Apple suffering share price drop of 7%.

WebAfrica starts planning to build their own network, selling 30% stake to Smartcom, expanding their current products and services. (Thanks Brendan for the heads up )

On a lighter note (sure to give you a chuckle), George Bush is now leaving the White House, however leaves behind a memorial legacy for all of us online, with the “miserable failure” GoogleBomb.

Let me not forget the flood of 2009 predictions the last 2 weeks, which are a great read for first few days, however they start to lose their luster after variation after variation. Matt Mcgee however offers a great sum up post on all the great predictions for all to read in 1 place. Bookmarking time folks.

This is yet just a “piece of the pie” as they say, while everyone started looking at the future of mobile search last year, it really looks that 2009 will be the year of mobile, Apple launching their new 3G Iphone and many businesses and marketing companies realising the potential of the mobile market. As mentioned in a collegues presentation from last year, the stats are definitely something to consider, especially within the South African market.

So the 2009 is off to a busy start, let’s hope will all that is happening business continues to go on and the recession will be a thing of the past.

I have my moments when i end up on a hunt, trawling through the SERPS to find figures or statistics on search engine market shares or even research completed on how search user behaviour has changed. 2008 has seen alot of changes compared to previous years, we know Big G leads the pack, and others follow suit, however it’s been a very interesting hunt the last week or 2, surprised that you cannot find some of the information i stumbled upon in 1 central point, post, article or whitepaper online.

Google UK

Google dominates within the UK market, by March 2008 Google was leading with 74% market share, which has climbed since last year up from over 65%. Now currently close to almost 80% of the market share within the UK.

That’s a fairly large increase to say the least, especially when looking at numbers of searches done within the UK market.

Google US

Not surprisingly enough, the Google US market share has also increased since last to 69% by March 2008, which wouldn’t surprise me seeing as Google Maps are more widely used within the US than anywhere else, among other little surprises they has released and updated over the past year.

How many searches go past the first page results?

In a post earlier this year from WebProNews, a user patience study completed by Yahoo!, IProspect and JupiterResearch revealed that over 40% of users look no further than the first page of results from a search query, users patience is lessening over the years. We all know first page is the prime real estate for any website, but in the past this has never been the be all and end all for a website. With that in mind, the potential for possible entry points to a website has widened since search engines offered “blended results“, video, images, blogs and news have opened opportunities for websites to grab that much needed traffic. Rankings are of course no the be all and end all for any website, as seen within the screenshot below, the potential for traffic is not solely dependant on a first page results for primary keywords.

“Pages from” versus “World Wide” results

Another interesting bit of information i came across was a small study done on the use of “world wide” or “pages from” within Google UK. Something i have been fairly intrigued to find out about, especially here in the local South African market. How Many people realise they can refine their searches to be country specific? As per the Hitwise study, the UK market shows their trust in the results for any searches done within Google UK (That the best results for their search will be delivered), as seen in the screenshot below, however when comparing this to the South African market the results would be slightly different. Due to the searches defaulting to the “world wide” results option, the increased number of international listings for local SA searches still dominates the results in some cases. For any South African, the use of “pages from” is more widely used than within the UK, as the results would be tailored to specifically SA, removing the tough international competition.

Hitwise ran a study during March 2008 for 4 weeks to find out just that for the UK market and as you would have guessed, the answer is just what you would expect.

Now having a study like the above for the South African market would be great, to officially reference on occasion, although i’m sure some of us know with our local clients and analytics, Google does bring in the highest percentage of traffic monthly, in some of industries even more than 70%.

Golden Triangle for Search

While at the SMX London expo last year, i had the priviledge of sitting in on a Gord Hotchkiss presentation, was an eye opener for me. During 1 of them, he referenced the heatmap we SEO’s so proudly put in front of clients, Gord discussed what he coined the Golden Triangle, while this was not the topic of discussion, it was mentioned to provide insight into why having a first page organic listing and top ad spot in paid search improved conversions by roughly 8%. This is definitely 1 area that every search marketer should be aware of when looking at the SERP landscape. While this has changed how traffic is driven to websites from organic searches, universal search has it’s own “triangle” and search behaviour to some degree.

For search statistics regarding the Job search market share and online job search statistics, i’ve covered that in a related post here Online Job Search Market Statistics.
